Producer Kevin Feige portrays Sersi as the film's main character. Director Chloé Zhao said he and Chan were interested in creating "a nuanced female superhero rarely seen in this genre". Zhao added that Chan "brought a wonderful sense of tenderness, compassion, and vulnerability" to the character which would "invite viewers to rethink what it means to be heroic". Chan called Sersi "down to earth a little free spirit" Chan previously played Minn-Erva in the MCU film Captain Marvel (2019).

Madden worked to find a way to describe Ikaris in a way that he would not come across as "bored of everything".
