REVIEW: Napoleon Dynamite The Most Absurd Comedy Of The Decade
One of the most absurd films of the decade, Napoleon Dynamite still manages to be a hilarious comedy in its own right. Featuring a quirky brand of alienated teen humor, this film relies more on good timing and character body language than just one upbeat sentence. If you enjoy its subtle humor, then Napoleon Dynamite is a film you'll find absolutely hilarious. Otherwise, it can lead to boredom or immediate confusion. The film has an almost non-existent storyline, but what its plot lacks, it makes up for with witty and hilarious comedy sequences.
Jon Heder plays the lead role of Napoleon Dynamite, an estranged and bookish high school teenager who lives with his grandmother and older brother, Kip (Aaron Ruell), in Preston, Idaho. Displaying an incomprehensible, unchanging facial expression throughout the film, Napoleon simply glides through life, gets kicked, pushed into a locker, and watches life go by. When a Spanish student named Pedro (Efren Ramirez) moves to the city, Napoleon befriends a social outcast. The two continued to talk about various topics, such as who to bring to the upcoming dance. A fellow student who has social challenges, Deb (Tina Majorino) becomes the object of their affection.

Meanwhile, Kip scours Internet chat rooms for women, and Napoleon's Uncle Rico (Jon Gries) moves in with the boys while their grandmother is away. Uncle Rico's own exploits add to the excitement of the film with a bit of substance, at least until Pedro decides to run for class president against the school's most popular girl, Summer (Haylie Duff). Now, Napoleon and Pedro must work against all odds to win the school election...

The true strength of Napoleon Dynamite is his clan of outrageous characters, characters so ridiculous that any viewer can show a mirror image of that character from his high school yearbook or his current life experiences. The captured social development of Napoleon and his friends is amplified to effect in the context of the film, drawing audiences into Darwin's teenage Lord of the Flies world. The humor is subtle at times, and Napoleon Dynamite isn't the same as an Academy Award-winning drama. But if you like dumb movies like Dumb And Dumber, then this is the movie for you.

Napoleon Dynamite is a unique comedy that pushes the boundaries of immature filmmaking and challenges the plot. In short, you will love it. Most of the characters are so pathetic, you will laugh at them just because they exist. One of the biggest surprises of 2004, Napoleon Dynamite is an eccentric comedy that definitely ranks as a must-see film.
