Review: Film Don't Look Up by Director Adam McKay

Don't Look Up is like flashes of various news reports that emerged during the pandemic era, when rulers ignored warnings from scientists but for the benefit of mankind. Through this film, director Adam McKay seems to give a strong satire on the attitude of government officials who have no conscience, thirst for power, are greedy, and do not take sides with the community. Not only that, the phenomenon of the media only chasing traffic for money instead of facts is also McKay's satire in this film.

McKay casually describes the greed that makes those who should be broadcasting facts and truth, instead spread fabricated news for personal gain. The social problems that McKay alludes to in this film also include the question of how modern society places such great importance on social media.

This film shows how social media, which is supposed to be a place where people from different parts of the Earth meet, becomes a gathering place for false information, hate speech, and harassment, in the name of freedom of opinion and expression. McKay did not hesitate to describe people who stupidly and without thinking believe everything on the internet and assume what he knows is the absolute truth.

Don't Look Up is essentially a material for reflection and at the same time stimulates the audience to think critically about various current social issues. However, McKay did not wrap this intention in a 'heavy' film, but a comedy film.

McKay's decision was right. The various allusions to many social problems in this film become relevant with the delivery that does not burden the mind, but can still be a material for reflection. Moreover, the condition of the world full of deceit is presented beautifully by top players and actors.

Don't Look Up is not playing games in cooperating with the cast, there are Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, to Leonardo DiCaprio who successfully stunned me because they were able to build tension and emotion in this film. This can be seen when DiCaprio transforms from a shy nerd in front of the camera, then slowly becomes good at tongue-in-cheek. But in the end he came to his senses and returned to his principles. The change in emotion was carried out very nicely and smoothly.

Not only the main cast, a number of additional players such as Ariana Grande also performed their roles well and made this film more colorful. Don't Look Up with its style and composition successfully touched me, even though there were many bad reviews for this film. Even so, this film was successful in conveying criticism to millions of people.

It is evident from the achievement of this film which was able to break the record as the longest watched film in a week on the Netflix streaming service. As of January 2022, the film was viewed 152.2 million times globally in the period 27 December to 2 January. Don't Look Up is the third most-watched film in its first 28 days, behind Bird Box (2018) and Red Notice (2021).

In addition, Don't Look Up also managed to get a number of prestigious nominations at the 94th Academy Awards or the 2022 Oscars, such as Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Film Editing. With all of that, there is a glimmer of hope in my mind that this film, which is full of environmental messages and reminders for the community, can get commensurate appreciation at a prestigious event like the 2022 Oscars.
