FILM REVIEW: CODA Which Is Nominated for “Best Picture” On The Night Of The Oscars 2022
The final night of the 2022 Oscars has been held on March 27, 2022. This year, there were 10 films that were nominated for “Best Picture”, one of which was CODA. Besides “Best Picture”, CODA was also nominated for “Best Supporting Actor” and “Best Adapted Screenplay”. Remarkably, this film managed to buy up all three awards.
The film, directed and written by Sian Heder, is a remake of the French and Belgian film La Famille Belier (2014). CODA stands for child of deaf adults (child of deaf parents). The film stars three deaf actors, including Marlee Matlin who won the 1987 “Best Actress” Oscar and Troy Kotsur who won the 2022 “Best Supporting Actor.” CODA is about Ruby Rossi, the only person who can hear among her deaf father, mother, and older sister. Raised by a deaf family, Ruby turned out to have a talent for singing. When Ruby wants to pursue her dream by auditioning for a music school, she is faced with the choice to continue helping her family's fishing business.

By installing the character of a high school teenager as the main character, CODA is rightly called a coming of age film. As the only one who can hear in her family, Ruby is really relied on by her parents in communicating with other people. No wonder it's hard for Ruby to be separated from her family because she is in charge of being a family translator. Ruby's inner turmoil began to emerge when the vocal teacher at her school convinced Ruby that she had a talent for singing. Her teacher even encouraged Ruby to continue her studies at a music school. But if Ruby chooses to go to college, her family will lose a translator. In fact, his parents are still struggling to build a business selling fish.
CODA is not the type of film that you have to think about while watching it. This film comes with a story that is so simple even with a fairly predictable plot. Well, what makes CODA interesting is that this film raises an issue that is rarely discussed. Through this film, we are made more aware of the lives of children with normal physiques who were born and raised by deaf families. So far, we often see stories about people with disabilities who were raised by families with normal physiques. Then, the simple story presented by CODA allows us to understand more about Ruby's honest inner turmoil. The honesty of Ruby's feelings that the audience can feel is what makes CODA feel heartwarming throughout the film.

CODA stars three deaf actors, including Troy Kotsur who plays Frank Rossi (Ruby's father), Marlee Martlin who plays Jackie Rossi (Ruby's mother), and Daniel Durant who plays Leo Rossi (Ruby's older brother). The three actors really appear perfectly in this film. Kotsur, Martlin, and Durant of course use sign language throughout the film. However, this in no way reduces their ability to convey the emotions of their characters to the audience. Among the three deaf actors at CODA, Kotsur and Durant's performances are arguably the most prominent.
Frank and Leo are told to work as fishermen and their jobs are threatened due to local council regulations. Well, Kotsur and Durant manage to show how frustrated Frank and Leo are who want to keep their jobs, but are hindered by communication problems. There are two moments from CODA that can make your eyes tear up while watching it. First, the moment when Leo was angry with Ruby because he felt he was useless without his sister. Second, the moment when Frank realized that Ruby did have a strong desire to pursue her dream as a singer. From these two moments, you will understand that being deaf is not a limitation in acting.

The character of Ruby Rossi is played by Emilia Jones, who also plays Kinsey Locke in the Locke & Key series. Director Sian Heder said that Jones managed to land the role of Ruby among the hundreds of people who followed the casting. Since Ruby is told as a character who has a talent for singing, you can also hear Jones' melodious voice on CODA. Jones' struggle to play Ruby was not easy. The actress had to undergo vocal training and learn sign language for nine months. Jones's efforts were sweet fruit. Jones looks so fluent when communicating using sign language and his voice is absolutely stunning in this film.
Another thing about Jones' performance at CODA that deserves appreciation is that his acting is so natural and smooth. Without excessive acting, Jones is able to show Ruby's anxiety in choosing her dreams or her family. Jones is able to bring the audience connected with Ruby so that they can feel the various feelings experienced by the character.
With a heartwarming story full of honest feelings, CODA has proven to be worthy of the “Best Picture” Oscar 2022. Plus, this film can be representative for the deaf community who want to pursue their dream of a career in acting. After reading the CODA film review, are you interested in watching this film?
