Getting Negative Reactions Morbius Tops Box Office Weekend
Ahead of its release in theaters, "Morbius" starring Jared Leto has been reaping a lot of negative reactions. However, despite scathing reviews and numerous delays, Sony's "Morbius" has already debuted at $39.1 million, putting it in line with earlier expectations.
Directed by Daniel Espinosa, Morbius tells the story of Dr. Michael Morbius (Jared Leto), a brilliant scientist who suffers from a rare blood disease. One of his radical healing potentials gave him a powerful and dangerous form of vampirism, turning him into the Living Vampire fans are known for from the comics.
"Morbius" enters its opening weekend in a position that many Marvel films don't. It was originally slated to premiere in 2020, but the coronavirus pandemic caused a total of six delays. That alone could potentially have an impact on the film's enthusiasm, but "Morbius" was also weighed down with negative reviews last week.
Last week's projections had forecast "Morbius" to be around 40-50 million but after pulling 5.7 million from Thursday night's preview, projections are shifting closer to the $40 million area. According to THR, the film grossed 39.1 million domestically in its first weekend from 4,268 theaters.
Globally, the film pulled in 84 million, more than its reported budget of 75 million. Of course, "Morbius" still has a lot of ways to go before it can be considered a success. Meanwhile, last weekend's #1 film, "The Lost City", grossed 14.8 million, bringing its domestic total to 54.6 million.
As many believe, "Morbius"'s opening weekend gross isn't anywhere near its other Sony-Marvel brethren, like 2018's "Venom" and its 2021 sequel. Both the film and "Venom: Let There Be Carnage" also received mixed to negative reviews, but they won the hearts of fans with Tom Hardy's riveting storyline and performance.
Got Negative Reviews Marvel Morbius Movie Gets High Scores ON Rotten Tomatoes
The long awaited Marvel movie "Morbius" is finally out in theaters. However, the film, starring Jared Leto, actually scored some critical reactions from many parties. However, "Morbius" actually received a different response on the review website Rotten Tomatoes. According to Comic Book, while the film only had 16 percent positive critical reactions, audience scores were four times higher at 64 percent positive.
With more critical reactions coming in, as well as more audience scores, these numbers are judged to be subject to change, although they are definitely more of a hit with the average audience. With over 150 critical scores tallied, this number may not change, but given that a new film is out for a day, audience scores can change drastically, for better or for worse. Rotten Tomatoes summed up the critics' consensus this way: "Cursed with uninspired effects, rote performances, and a senseless story, this grim mess is a futile attempt to make Morbius happen."

A similar thing had previously happened to the release of the film "Venom" in 2018. The film, starring Tom Hardy, received 30 percent positive reviews from critics, but the audience score was 80 percent positive. However, the opposite can also happen. Like in the case of "Captain Marvel". Although the film starring Brie Larson scored 79 percent positive reviews with critics, it only received 45 percent positive reviews from audiences.
One of the most interesting and conflicted characters in the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters comes to the big screen as Oscar winner Leto transforms into the mysterious antihero Michael Morbius. Suffering from terminal illness with a rare blood disorder and determined to save others who have suffered the same fate, Morbius tries desperately to make a bet. Although at first it seemed that it would be a success but instead the darkness within him was released.
