Review : Scream (2022) Movie A Heavy Burden For A Legendary Film
It's a heavy burden to make a film of a legendary masterpiece, and Scream (2022) holds that burden. Refusing to be called a remake or reboot, Scream 2022 comes with Neve Campbell, the icon from the previous Scream sequel. Scream has never disappointed the audience despite its banal formula. It seems that you will also feel when watching Scream in 2022. Predictably, 25 years after the events of Woodsboro, the theme is still the same: about the terrorist and mysterious killer Ghostface who is identical with a black robe and a ghost mask. This killer roams the neighborhood, killing young people who at first are eager to find the culprit, acting as if she is a goddess of death who can take anyone's life.
Like Scream (1996), Scream (2022) opens with a young woman who is alone at home, gets a mysterious phone call that invites conversation to then break into the house and stab it sadistically. This time, the unfortunate victim is Tara Carpenter, a woman who loves horror but is more interested in horror-filled dramas. Then, what's the problem? Well, this is what makes him have to fight for his life in the hospital. Between the horrors that are getting crazier with the story, even using complicated plot twists and complex demon names, Scream comes with the same formula as before. The plot is simple.
Without the need to watch the film, those of you who were born in the 90s and above certainly already know that Scream 2022 will tell you about a mysterious character who likes to slash and then reveal his identity at the end. So, what's interesting? What is the magic that makes this film worth enjoying? The answer is memories and fandom. Vreskot (2022) is a legend that has its own fan base. When watching Scream 2022, you also remember the 1996 Original Scream. There is a strong relationship between the main character and Billy Loomis, the villain aka Ghostface in 1996 who is insane.
This strong relationship is not just a patch. The worries, traumas, and fears of the main character are well-founded. In addition, several actors who have appeared in the previous sequels are also present here. What about fandoms? Well, without you knowing it, this is what makes Scream fun and not just a horror film with a parade of jumpscares, crazy myths, and spooky ghosts. "Scream scares us by reminding the audience that human behavior in the real world can be that scary." When you watch until the end, you will know that the motive behind Ghostface's actions is fanaticism towards something. This fanaticism makes a group of blind people desperate to bring a dangerous urban legend to the real world, because they feel that they are the ones who can perfect it!
This excessive fanaticism does not only exist in visual works. In fact, we often find netizens who are willing to make noise and even threaten just because they feel they understand the most about something they like. In fact, what they like is not really important to fuss about. What was originally a refreshing activity has turned into an obsession. Well, this message is very strong with what Billy Loomis once conveyed: "Now Sid, don't you blame the movies. Movies don't create psychos. Movies make psychos more creative!"
It feels like a sin to get a feeling of relief and feel good after watching a horror-thriller genre film, but that's what audiences might feel, especially those who grew up with sequel after sequel to Scream. The setting, the interactions between the characters, and even the houses in this neighborhood seem to be united, solid, dragging us in there. We feel like we are part of Tara's gang and share the same anxiety.
Moreover, it is added with things that are very relevant to today's technological developments, such as how the characters interact with gadgets and the security system at Tara's house. The rapid development of technology does not seem to be able to avoid us from the crazy things that certain fanatics have. So, the horror of Scream can be so real as well as fun. Of course, this is a sensation that you won't get when you watch horror films that are thick with mystical things or old places.
You have a big shoes to fill. That's the threat pinned by many Scream fans when the 2022 film will be released. The fan's threat seemed to be warded off as well as being satirized; and it's nice to see this film succeed in doing just that. Plus, the gore elements are better than the previous films. For those of you who really hate blood and show intense pain before death, maybe this is not the right film for you.
Of course there are drawbacks. Among other things, a rather sluggish rhythm and a "noisy" terror process. There are some disturbing dialogues before the attack and it's more fun to skip it. In addition, seeing anyone who lives at the end seems annoying and looks like a "forced" girl power message. However, these shortcomings are covered by a fairly solid story and cannot be separated from the nuances of Scream Original.
Besides the Scream Movie, there is also another horror film that we are looking forward to, namely the anti-hero film Morbius (2022). For those of you who grew up in the 90s, you may still remember what it was like to watch the Scream film on DVD or wait for it to air on national television at night. While eating your favorite food and being covered in a blanket, you also feel the tension of being terrorized by Ghostface wrapped in a reality that not everyone can believe. You enjoy every moment of it without the distraction of previously unproduced devices.
