This scene of Albus' fight with Gellert takes place during the election of the chairman of the International Confederation of Wizards in Tibet. In that election, Gellert Grindelwald became one of the candidates.

Gellert Grindelwald became one of the candidates who entered the election on the way. After he was acquitted of all charges of his previous crimes in a strange way. Grindelwald is clearly a candidate with great support due to his fanatical followers who share the belief that wizards should be above non-magical humans aka muggles or no-majs.

However, Grindelwald had prepared a cunning way to win the battle, namely by reviving the Qilin magical beast he had slashed before. Qilin is a magical animal that has the ability to see the future and the sincerity and honesty of a person. He is traditionally used in the election of the Chairman of the International Confederation of Wizards.

With the Qilin already bewitched with necromancy and becoming an inferior, Gellert Grindelwald could easily get the manipulated animal to choose him over the other two candidates. Grindelwald's victory was clearly a nightmare for opponents of the powerful black magician. However, Albus Dumbledore's team has prepared a strategy to thwart this.

Newt Scamander, who had previously saved the Qilin twins from Grindelwald's orders, revealed the whereabouts of the Qilin twins. The other unbewitched Qilin then chose who was entitled to become the Confederate Head. Unexpectedly, the second Qilin chose Albus Dumbledore to become the Head of the Confederation. However, the appointment of the Qilin was politely rejected by Albus, who felt he did not deserve to be the leader of the world's magicians.

Qilin then chose another candidate to become chairman of the Confederation, namely Vicencia Santos. This victory and the scandal that unfolded made Grindelwald cornered. It is unknown whose spell caused Ariana's death.
