5 Movies That Ruled the Korean Box Office This Week

1. Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore


Fantastická zvířata: Brumbálova tajemství (2022) continues Gellert Grindelwald's ambition to rule the wizarding world. That evil intent left the wizarding world shrouded in darkness. Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) is then moved to ward off Grindelwald's ambitions. He also sends Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) with a team of wizards and non-wizards to stop Grindelwald's mission.

The battle between Newt Scamander's army and Grindelwald's army finally broke out. On the other hand, Dumbledore is also being hunted by Credence Barebone (Ezra Miller) who holds a grudge. In its first week of screening in Korea, Fantastic Beasts 3: The Secrets of Dumbledore grossed US$2.3 million from sales of 306,364 tickets on 1,256 screens.

2. I Want to Know Your Parents

I Want to Know Your Parents is about an eighth grader who commits suicide. But before he died, he had time to write the names of other students who made him a victim.

The letter forced the parents of the student whose name was written down to come to school. A feud ensued at the school due to the will. The film stars Sol Kyung-gu, Chun Woo-hee, Moon So-ri, Oh Dal-soo, Go chang-seok, and Kim Hong-pa. I Want to Know Your Parents sold 225,305 tickets on 1,007 screens which is equivalent to US$1.65 million.

3. Toxic

Toxic is a Korean film that tells the story of the damage caused by a humidifier disinfectant incident. The disaster spread to revealing the truth of the mysterious deaths of several people. It is also a means of informing the world about the pain of the victims and their families who are still grieving.

Toxic stars Kim Sang-kyung, Seo Young-hee, Yoon Gyung-ho, Lee Sun-bin, Lee Jin-hoon, and Jang Gwang. The film is directed by Jo Yong-sun, who previously directed No Breathing (2013). This week, Toxic sold 73,412 tickets on 692 screens. That brings total sales to 143,624 tickets since it aired April 22 in South Korea.

4. Urban Myths

Urban Myths: Tooth Worms (2022) is a Korean horror film filled with K-pop idols, such as Arin Oh My Girl, Shownu MONSTA X, Minhyuk BTOB, Haknyeon The Boyz, Jaehyun Golden Child, to Exy WJSN.

Urban Myths tells the horrors that can be found in everyday life because it can be easily found in familiar places, such as noises on the floor, used furniture, mannequins, and social media. The film collected US$444.7 thousand from sales of 60,403 tickets on 474 screens this week.

5. Anchor

Anchor tells the story of announcer Se-ra (Chun Woo-hee) who suddenly gets a phone call from a stranger giving information that someone will kill her. The call he received five minutes before the live broadcast.

At first, Se-ra ignores it and chooses to think it's just a joke. However, he slowly began to be bothered by the information. Se-ra's mother, So-young (Lee Hye-young), instead says the information could make her son a real host. So, Se-ra decides to visit the informant's house to find out more.

Unfortunately, upon arrival, Se-ra finds the bodies of the informant and her daughter and it haunts her constantly. This week, Anchor collected US$401.8 thousand from sales of 54,680 tickets on 764 screens.
