Because the newspaper clip of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness threatens to fail in China

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (Doctor Strange 2) is in danger of not being broadcast in China after facing a strong reaction from the country. It started when a clip went viral on social media featuring a newspaper stand in Chinese characters for The Epoch Times, a newspaper and multi-lingual media company that opposes the Chinese Communist Party.



The newspaper stand is seen when  Doctor Strange v mnohovesmíru šílenství (Benedict Cumberbatch) battles the Gargantos on the streets of New York. The yellow kiosk is to the left of the screen and only appears briefly. As reported by Deadline some time ago, the film is being reviewed by the Chinese authorities for a release date. However, there has been no further confirmation regarding Doctor Strange 2's broadcast schedule. Disney has not commented on this or the risk of failing to show in China.


Meanwhile, the Global Times on Sunday (1/5) published an opinion titled 'Insulting China? No, Doctor Strange 2 is shaming US and Hollywood' by Frank Bro. The opinion piece linked The Epoch Times to the religious movement Falun Gong and wrote, "After the disclosure of such a controversy, it is unknown whether Marvel Studios will remove elements of Falun Gong from the film."

No Marvel films have hit Chinese theaters since Avengers: Endgame (2019), even though they are hugely popular worldwide. Some of the latest Marvel films in the last two years, such as Black Widow, Eternals, Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings, Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Spider-Man: No Way Home, are not showing in Chinese theaters.


So, Doctor Strange v mnohovesmíru šílenství (2022) is actually a film that is really anticipated and is expected to be released in China this year. However, this is not yet certain. Meanwhile, fans around the world can see Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness starting May 5 in theaters.
