Idris Elba Becomes a Genie to Grant Tilda Swinton's 3 Wishes in Three Thousand Years of Longing

Ahead of its Cannes Film Festival premiere, MGM has released the first trailer for George Miller's next film after "Mad Max: Fury Road," "Three Thousand Years of Longing". The film stars Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba.

The film was adapted from the short story "The Djinn in the Nightingale's Eye" by A.S. byatt. In the first trailer that debuted on Friday (20/5), the quiet academic Dr. Alithea Binnie, played by Swinton, releases a genie out of a bottle when she brings home accessories from a bazaar in Istanbul while attending a conference.

Before long, he finds himself not alone anymore with an ancient Djinn (Elba) who has three wishes in his hands. But the wise scholar of story and mythology was too wise for the dangers that might lay before him.

"There's no story about wishing it wasn't a cautionary tale," said Swinton as Alithea Binnie. The ancient genie played by Elba also answered that basically all humans must have desires, even if they are hidden ones.

"We all have desires, even if they remain hidden from us," Elba said. "But that's your story, and I can't wait to see where it goes."

Binnie, who thinks he can outsmart the Djinn with his knowledge of myths and legends, investigates the djinn to tell him more about the people he has granted his wish in his many lifetimes. But in the end, the sober intellectual is deceived and makes surprising expectations when the time-jumping duo develop unexpected feelings for each other.

This romantic fantasy genre film will debut at the Cannes Film Festival. "Three Thousand Years of Longing" hits theaters on August 31.
