Apple and Westbrook Studios Officially Postpone Release of Will Smith's Emancipation

Apple and production house Westbrook Studios postponed the release of Will Smith's latest film, Emancipation, to 2023. Initially, the film was to be screened at a film festival this fall. The production house has not been able to share the exact date of Emancipation's broadcast. Meanwhile, Apple has not commented on the decision.

A source familiar with the situation told Variety on Friday (6/5) that 'it is an unspoken truth' that the drama Emancipation will not hit the platform in 2022. However, the same source also revealed there are ongoing internal discussions between Apple executives and filmmakers about a possible release of the film were brought forward, but it seems unlikely.

Emancipation is directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day). The film will be Will Smith's first release after slapping Chris Rock during the 94th Oscars some time ago. As is known, the 2022 Oscars were marked by a controversial incident when Will Smith went on stage and slapped Chris Rock.

This drama begins when Chris Rock decides to joke before reading the winner of the Oscar 2022 best documentary category. The person he makes jokes about is Will Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett.

At that time, Jada Pinkett looked bald after shaving off her hair. He did this because it was related to the Alopecia he had and caused his hair to fall out.

"Jada I love you, 'G.I. Jane 2,' can't wait to see it.," Rock joked to Jada Pinkett referring to the film G.I. Jane (1997) when Demi Moore appeared bald. At first, Will Smith was still grinning at the joke, even though Jada Pinkett looked annoyed at the camera. Until not long after, Will Smith came on stage.

Will Smith's arrival on stage was unexpected by Chris Rock. He initially thought Will Smith was going to be joking too, until the actor's swing landed hard on Chris Rock's cheek.

As a result, Smith was barred from attending the Oscars and other academy-related events for 10 years. Meanwhile, rumors regarding Emancipation had been growing ahead of this year's Oscars. Prior to the event, a filmmaker, who asked not to be named, told Variety that they saw early footage of the film.

The film Emancipation was written by Bill Collage. The film also includes Todd Black, Joey McFarland and Jon Mone as producers. Besides Will Smith, this film also stars Ben Foster (The Survivor). Broadly speaking, this film tells the story of a slave who tries to escape from his master, a plantation owner. Apart from that, there are also films waiting for this May, namely Promlčeno (2022) and Láska hory přenáší (2022).

Meanwhile, Will Smith is reportedly in Mumbai, India. Reporting from ET which was released on Saturday (23/4), Will Smith arrived at a private airport in Mumbai, India on Saturday (23/4). His arrival was greeted by a swarm of paparazzi.

Smith was seen wearing a white t-shirt, gray shorts combined with white compression and Jordan sneakers. Richard William's actor in the film King Richard is said to be in India in the process of 'healing' after being involved in the case of slapping Chris Rock on the Oscar 2022 stage.
