Review: Memory Film (2022) Starring Liam Neeson Which Airs This April
Liam Neeson is not a bad actor. He is much more than that. If you watch his films, you will know that this actor has more than just talent for playing on the big screen.
But if the question were changed to whether Liam Neeson's recent choice of roles was too boring, the answer would probably be "yes". Although Neeson plays well in various types of genres, but since Taken, this one actor is too comfortable to play as a hitman or martial artist with few problems to make his film different from other cheap action films. Sometimes relationship issues, sometimes alcoholic. And what keeps these films from being made (and watched) is the fact that Liam Neeson plays this so effortlessly, the audience easily gets into his world.
In Memory, the latest film directed by Martin Campbell, which yesterday also released The Protégé, Liam Neeson plays Alex Lewis. He is an assassin who is very good at his job. He has no moral compass, all work is work. The only taboo for him was killing small children. That's why when he was sent to kill a young girl, he decided to quit which eventually made him the target of the mafia, local police, FBI agents and even hidden spies.

Adapted from the Belgian film The Memory of a Killer (which is an adaptation of the book by Jef Geeraerts), Memory provides a bit of an edge to set this film apart from other Liam Neeson films. Alex Lewis here is still the same as the previous film characters: a loner, has martial arts skills and completes his actions more than average despite his old age and very competent. What makes Memory a bit different is the fact that Alex Lewis has problems with his memory. His memory was starting to blur and it seemed like dementia would soon catch up with him.
What you love (and maybe what you're bored of) about Liam Neeson's films is here. The plot is complicated but not too complex, the scenes are quite exciting (especially the murder scene at the gym) and the conclusion is clear. Liam Neeson is once again convincing as Alex Lewis. At his age, he is no longer young, he is able to compete with young actors with his physical abilities that are still okay. And acting, Neeson is able to tell a lot of emotions just through his eyes. You can see the fatigue in his eyes when he's at a dead end. And you could see the confusion over this memory problem from the look on his face.
Also interesting in Memory (2022) is perhaps how the scriptwriter, Dario Scardapane, invites the audience to see Alex Lewis. It's easy to support Liam Neeson because this one actor is very charismatic. But in Memory, the author describes Alex Lewis as a character who kills for money. Alex Lewis wasn't a good-hearted criminal or he was forced to do this. He did make a living as a killer. And that makes Memory interesting because as viewers we're all too used to supporting Liam Neeson. In this film, we are invited to see if what Alex Lewis did was good or not. This makes the film a little bit honest.

But sadly all those "special seasonings" just end there. Memory is still a fairly standard Liam Neeson film. Guy Pearce plays pretty well (which is funny how he played a character with memory problems in Nolan's Memento). Monica Bellucci, who got the role of the villain, played rather lazily.
Campbell as a director includes things that are quite "hot" such as the issue of children being locked up at immigration but that doesn't make Memory feel political. This is just a decoration to make this film feel a little more meaningful. Memory is an inside and out entertainment action film. Apart from that, another fun film to watch is Poslední závod (2022). This film can be a fun alternative to watch, especially if you invite film lovers Liam Neeson to watch it together.
