Screenwriter Michael Waldron Defends Wanda Maximoff's Transformation in Doctor Strange 2
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness screenwriter Michael Waldron defended the transformation of Wanda Maximoff's character in the film. Waldron understands the debate that arose among fans against Wanda Maximoff. Waldron also defends Wanda Maximoff by pointing to Darkhold, an evil book of magic, as the cause of her transformation into the Scarlet Witch.
"Honestly, after watching and studying WandaVision, I feel like she's at the point where she's overpowered by Darkhold, which is where she's ready to go wild," Waldron said as reported by Variety on Tuesday (10/5). "He's reached a point he's reached in the comics, and we believe he can do it," continued Waldron.
Elizabeth Olsen in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022) returns to play the role of Wanda Maximoff, who has now turned into a powerful Scarlet Witch. The transformation began with the Westview incident in the WandaVision series, when Wanda got Darkhold from Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn).
Michael Waldron also tells how Wanda's story in Doctor Strange 2 continues her character's journey after WandaVision. He said Wanda is still grieving the loss of her loved ones.
"I don't think he really resolved his grief on the series, and I don't think he resolved his anger," Waldron said.
"I think all those hanging [emotions] are something Darkhold preyed on when he received Darkhold from Agatha," he continued. In this film, Wanda was originally the person Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) turned to help deal with attacks from monsters from other universes. However, Wanda apparently had intentions of her own.

Previously, Elizabeth Olsen also said that her passion for Wanda's figure was deepened because it involved emotions as a mother.
"I really like being called someone's mother. It's something I didn't realize before, but I have experienced it a lot," Olsen said.
"I love playing with her [Wanda Maximoff] colors, her soul, her anger, her love. I really love her and I fight for her," continued the actress.
