Top Gun: Maverick's New Record As Film With The Biggest Memorial Day Holiday Debut In History
Top Gun: Maverick set a new record. Tom Cruise's film succeeded in overtaking Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End as the film with the biggest Memorial Day holiday debut in history. Variety reported on Monday (30/5), that the 36-year sequel film was successful in gaining audiences on Memorial Day long weekend. and broke the box office debut of US$156 million over four days of release.
This figure is higher than Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, which previously held the title of the highest Memorial Day holiday debut film in history since 2007.In addition, this latest achievement exceeds the predictions of the studio producer Top Gun Maverick. Paramount and Skydance previously predicted that Top Gun Maverick would reach US$151 million.
However, according to Variety, the film experienced a surge in ticket purchases on Sunday (29/5) that took its three-day weekend to $126 million, $2 million more than previously predicted.With this number, Top Gun Maverick, which does not have the frills of a superhero film, is able to be part of a number of films that have triumphed at the post-pandemic box office.
Previous films scored high opening box office numbers after the pandemic shut theaters for two years, including Spider-Man No Way Home with US$260 million, Doctor Strange 2 with US$187 million and The Batman with US$134 million.
Top Gun 2 Maverick (2022) revenue also continues to grow from the international market. After previously reportedly earning US$109 million from the international market, the film has now earned US$126 million from that market.
So, globally, Top Gun Maverick has now pocketed US$282 million or equivalent to Rp4.1 trillion (US$1=Rp14,583), from a production budget of US$170 million. Previously, Top Gun Maverick was the highest-grossing Tom Cruise film in the actor's career.
