Thor: Love and Thunder is the Thor film with the highest box office debut

Thor: Love and Thunder was a success at the box office, earning US$143 million or equivalent to Rp2.1 trillion (US$1=Rp14,979).


With this achievement, called Entertainment Weekly on Sunday (10/7), Thor 4 became the Thor film with the highest debut income.

That figure exceeds Thor: Ragnarok (2017) with US$122.7 million, Thor (2011) with US$65.7 million, and The Dark World (2013) with US$85.7 million. According to Comscore data, Thor: Love and Thunder scored US$302 million globally or Rp. 4.5 trillion.

This global achievement, Deadline reported on Sunday (10/7), became Hollywood's third-biggest weekend during the pandemic era, and second-best of 2022 after Doctor Strange in The Multiverse of Madness. In the international market, South Korea was the largest market with US$15.3 million, United Kingdom with US$14.8 million, Australia with US$13.8 million, and Mexico with US$11.8 million.

In Thor: Love and Thunder, Chris Hemsworth returns to reprise his iconic character as the God of Thunder. This time, he also met some old names such as Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, and Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie. Jane Foster, who was Thor's ex-lover in the previous films, has now transformed into Mighty Thor.

In addition, in Thor: Love and Thunder, the God of Thunder faces off against Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale) whose ambition is to kill all the gods in the universe.

Meanwhile, the director Taika Waititi, described this film as a film to show Thor who is going through a "crisis in middle age".

"It's not a serious film, and it's not a drama either, but we managed to come to terms with some ideas that I think a lot of humanity would also deal with - universal themes about love and loss, and our place in this world," explains Waititi.

"Everyone has some similar questions in this film like: What is your goal? What is the reason that you are a hero, and what do you do when you have all those powers?," he added. "It really describes a midlife crisis film," Waititi said.
