Anti-hero Morbius Week One Earns USD 39.1 million

The anti-hero film based on the Marvel Comics story, Morbius, grossed USD 39.1 million or around Rp. 561.8 billion in the US box office weekend in the first weekend of April 2022. Morbius was produced by Columbia Pictures and distributed by Sony. Starring Jared Leto as Marvel's anti-hero, the character Morbius was initially introduced as the nemesis of Spider-Man.



In this story, Michael Morbius is a Nobel prize winning doctor who accidentally turns himself into a bloodsucking creature or vampire. Morbius (2022) film debut is considered not as interesting as other Marvel superhero films. "This is a weak opening by Marvel's extraordinary standards to launch a new superhero series," Franchise Entertainment Research said in a statement.

For comparison, the character of Venom also started in the Spider-Man story and the debut of the Venom film at the box office managed to collect USD 80 million dollars (Rp 1.14 trillion) in October 2018. The presence of the Morbius film in its first week has replaced The Lost City which previously dominated American box office. This film stars Sandra Bullock who plays the character of a novelist named Loretta Sage.

The conflict in The Lost City story occurs when a tycoon (Daniel Radcliffe) kidnaps the Sage. He wants the novel's author to help him find an artifact buried on a deserted island. On the other hand, Alan Caprison (Channing Tatum) tries to help the Sage escape in the middle of the forest.

The film, which was distributed by Paramount Pictures, was ranked second in the US box office by earning USD 14.8 million (Rp. 212.6 billion) for the weekend to Sunday (3/4).

On its fifth weekend in theaters, superhero film The Batman added $10.8 million in revenue over the same period. The acquisition brought the film, starring Robert Pattinson, to the third place at the box office. Uncharted took the fourth place at the box office for the second week in a row, earning USD 3.6 million (Rp 51.7 billion). While in fifth place, the animated film Jujutsu Kaisen 0 from Crunchroll/Funimation earned USD 2 million (Rp 28.7 billion).


Sluggish on the first day of screening Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore Only Managed to gross USD20.1 million


The Fantastic Beasts film series is finally back with a third film and is expected to be a big hit at the box office in its first appearance. In 2016, the first Fantastic Beasts film managed to open views with a figure of USD 74.4 million or IDR 868 billion; while the second film, in 2018, grossed USD 62.2 million or IDR 726 billion.

When combined with the achievements of other Harry Potter films, Fantastic Beasts 3 is also declared the film from the Wizarding World franchise with the lowest international revenue, at USD 58 million or around Rp. 677 billion, despite being screened in 22 countries as of April 8 last.

The low income of the third Fantastická zvířata: Brumbálova tajemství (2022) is thought to come from the various controversies that surround it; starting from the anti-transgender tweets that J.K. Rowling on Twitter, the firing of Johnny Depp from the role of Grindelwald, to the recent arrest of actor Ezra Miller for violence. From the size of the story itself, there are many critics who say Fantastic Beasts 3 fails to deliver a neat storyline and surprise the audience. Almost all the "secrets" that this film keeps can be guessed from the start by big Harry Potter fans.

This film was released as a continuation of the story of Newt Scamander in his quest to stop the wizarding war started by an evil wizard named Grindelwald, this third Fantastic Beasts also brings the audience through the Hogwarts school in the past and meets the young Albus Dumbledore. Starring Eddie Redmayne, Jude Law, and Mads Mikkelsen who took over the role of Grindelwald.
