Interesting Facts About Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore You Need To Know

FILM Fantastic Beasts finally returned to the big screen after the series The Crimes of Grindelwald was released in 2018. This time The Secrets of Dumbledore tells the story of Albus Dumbledore who assigns Newt Scamander and his friends with a mission that takes them to the center of the dark wizard army of Gellert Grindelwald.

This adventure and fantasy genre film itself is a prequel film as well as a spin-off of the Harry Potter films created by J.K Rowling. Just like before, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore again stars Eddie Redmayne, Jude Law, Mads Mikkelsen, Ezra Miller, and many more. In fact, fans can already watch Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore since Wednesday, April 13, 2022 in theaters. Before watching, let's take a look at some interesting facts from the film:

Newt Scamander's Return

Continuing the story of The Crimes of Grindelwald, this time Newt Scamander the magical animal researcher must return to save the world after Grindelwald the evil wizard managed to escape and start a magic war. Realizing that he needed additional help, Newt had to return to England to meet his favorite teacher, Albus Dumbledore.

Dumbledore and Grindelwald's Old Relationship

After a bit of discussing Dumbledore and Grindelwald's relationship in the Harry Potter film series, this third Fantastic Beasts film will delve deeper into these two powerful wizards. Through several Warner Bros. publications, apparently it was revealed that Dumbledore and Grindelwald were former lovers who separated due to differences in understanding about the wizarding world.

Identity Credence

In the first two Fantastic Beasts films, actor Ezra Miller also appeared and played Credence; mysterious teenage boy who has tremendous magical power. Not an ordinary teenager, it turns out that Credence is part of Dumbledore's magical family, his first name is Aurelius, who has a grudge against the world due to his unhappy childhood.

Johnny Depp Goes, Mads Mikkelsen Comes

As a result of a domestic violence scandal, actor Johnny Depp was finally forced to leave this film project so that Warner Bros. not involved in the controversy. As a result, Grindelwald's role has now changed hands to Mads Mikkelsen, a fierce Danish actor who has become famous through the television series Hannibal and the James Bond film series.

Return of David Yates

As in the previous two films, Fantastiska vidunder: Dumbledores hemligheter (2022) hela filmen will again be directed by David Yates, a filmmaker who has eaten sour and salt in the wizarding world of J.K. Rowling. Before becoming permanent director of the Fantastic Beasts trilogy, David had directed four Harry Potter films; from Order of the Phoenix to Deathly Hallows part two.

It took three years before Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore continued Newt Scamander's story with magical animals in the wizarding world. Although this film is no longer entirely about the story of capturing magical creatures, but this time it is more difficult and complex with the safety of the wizarding and muggle world at stake.

Synopsis Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore

The film opens with Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne), a magizoologist who wants to protect a rare Qilin creature who has the power to see into human souls. But Credence (Ezra Miller) arrives with Grindelwald's army, captures the Qilin and kills its mother. On the other hand, Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) who can't fight Grindelwald (Mads Mikkelsen) because of the blood agreement between the two asks Newt for help.

Together with his new group, Professor Hicks (Jessica Williams), Yusuf Kama (William Nadylam), and muggle Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler), Newt learns that Grindelwald wants to be the leader of the wizarding world chosen by the Qilin. They then tried to prevent the election of Grindelwald under Dumbledore's direction.

A more complicated world of magic

The audience is again invited to visit the wizarding world of Harry Potter and Hogwarts. There's more of a Hogwarts feel to it than the previous two films, but less whimsical creatures and a magical atmosphere. If the previous film relied on CGI which was widely criticized, this time David Yates as the director focused on a more complex plot, or maybe you could say it was too crowded. Half of this film has too much plot information, you need enough energy to study and digest it all. Not necessarily delivered in a light and entertaining form, but too complex with all the complexity of the characters and story development.

Although there is a lot of magic available, such as teleportation, Accio, and curses, unfortunately this film loses the charm of an amazing wizarding world like the first film. If anything, the audience is distracted by the plot that seems to run non-stop.

The emergence of Mads Mikkelsen

While the Fantastic Beasts franchise has yet to match the popularity of the original Harry Potter films, the first two films have crossed the $1 billion mark. It's just that the third film is somehow loved by many problems. The first is a critique of J.K.'s transphobic comments. Rowling (red flag), the violent case that happened to Johnny Depp (although not proven, it's still a red flag), and the latest arrest of Ezra Miller in Hawaii (red flag!). The Depp case culminated in the re-casting of Grindelwald's role, belonging to the charming Mads Mikkelsen.

The most distinguishing between The Secrets of Dumbledore and the two previous films is of course the role of Grindelwald, previously played by Johnny Depp, given to Mads Mikkelsen who is famous for his role in the Hannibal series.

The presence of Mads brings a new aura from Grindelwald. Gives the impression of being mysterious, fragile, and no less flamboyant than Depp. A plus for Mads is that Grindelwald's dangerous impression feels more calm and charismatic. His chemistry with Dumbledore is very pronounced, considering this film emphasizes the love relationship between the two characters. Jacob Kowalski is still charming as the backbone of comedy in this film. His appearance is no longer only as an entertainer, but has a significant role for the continuity of the story. In the midst of a chaotic story, Kowalski's arc feels smoother than Scamander or Dumbledore.

The end of the Fantastic Beasts series?

But on the one hand, The Secrets of Dumbledore is quite good in continuing what is happening in the wizarding world. Become a thirst quencher from the cliffhanger in The Crimes of Grindelwald. It's even good enough to close the story of Newt and Dumbledore, making the fourth film less important.

If at the end of the second film Grindelwald reveals that Credence is part of the Dumbledore family, this film acts as a completion of that premise. Although throughout the film, Credence's existence seems to be marginalized and only becomes a side plot that adds to the complexity of the whole story. Perhaps this is what makes The Secrets of Dumbledore lose its charm among the three Fantastic Beasts films. Too many moments and plots combined in one film. Brings more energy to swallow all the new information in the wizarding world of Harry Potter.

Not to mention the presence of Tina (Katherine Waterston) which feels forced at the end. Shown as a cameo which is quite nostalgic. Hmm, could this be an overnight change from the scriptwriter and director? Or to make sure all the arcs in this are fulfilled? Because J.K. Rowling plans to have five films in the series following the hugely successful Harry Potter (and doesn't know where else to go). With all the problems that exist outside the film, it is possible that this film will be the closing of the Fantastic Beasts franchise. But of course it all depends on its box office success.

Hasil terjemahaThe impression of politics and the battle between good and evil to save the world is getting more and more obvious, but the pace that goes up and down makes the two-hour duration even more boring. Although this series is devoted to a more mature audience than the Harry Potter franchise, this is what makes Fantastic Beasts unique. The existence of magic is very dangerous and the survival of the world is at stake. Not to mention the political themes, betrayal, and a darker plot make the third edition heavier.
