FILM REVIEW: CODA Which Is Nominated for “Best Picture” On The Night Of The Oscars 2022

Image
The final night of the 2022 Oscars has been held on March 27, 2022. This year, there were 10 films that were nominated for “Best Picture”, one of which was CODA. Besides “Best Picture”, CODA was also nominated for “Best Supporting Actor” and “Best Adapted Screenplay”. Remarkably, this film managed to buy up all three awards. The film, directed and written by Sian Heder, is a remake of the French and Belgian film La Famille Belier (2014). CODA stands for child of deaf adults (child of deaf parents). The film stars three deaf actors, including Marlee Matlin who won the 1987 “Best Actress” Oscar and Troy Kotsur who won the 2022 “Best Supporting Actor.” CODA is about Ruby Rossi, the only person who can hear among her deaf father, mother, and older sister. Raised by a deaf family, Ruby turned out to have a talent for singing. When Ruby wants to pursue her dream by auditioning for a music school, she is faced with the choice to continue helping her family's fishing business. Also Read: S...

Film Review: The Tinder Swindler Real-time Documentary About Shimon Yehuda Yahut

Image
How often have you been attracted to someone just because of their attractive profile on dating apps? There, the users definitely show their best side. However, what if that side is modified in such a way, so that it doesn't match the reality? The Tinder Swindler is a real-time documentary about Shimon Yehuda Yahut, an Israeli con artist who uses the name Simon Leviev to approach women on dating apps. The name Leviev was chosen as a surname because it is the same as the last name of Lev Leviev, a Russian diamond businessman of rich Israeli descent. Why is it so easy to be fooled? Well, before judging the victims, you must watch The Tinder Swindler first. The fraud mode via dating apps in this documentary is exactly the same as in the Esa case. The nominal earned by the perpetrators is also fantastic. The Tinder Swindler is a real-time documentary about Shimon Yehuda Yahut, an Israeli con artist who uses the name Simon Leviev to approach women on dating apps. The name Leviev was chos...

Review: Million Dollar Baby Nominated for 5 Golden Globes and 7 Academy Awards

Image
Nominated for 5 Golden Globes and 7 Academy Awards, including Best Motion Picture of the Year, Million Dollar Baby opened to widespread critical acclaim and excellent audience reviews. Director Clint Eastwood, whose career spans multiple decades in Hollywood, creates perhaps his greatest film to date, and co-stars Morgan Freeman (Shawshank Redemption) and Hilary Swank (Boys Don’t Cry) light up the screen with their deft character portrayals and unique charisma. Combining all the inspiration of Rocky with all the drama of a Greek tragedy, Million Dollar Baby is well-deserved of its Best Picture victory (despite the many protests of competing directors who think Eastwood won based on nostalgia for his heralded career and his personal likeability). Million Dollar Baby focuses on tough-skinned boxing manager Frankie Dunn (Clint Eastwood), proprietor of a local training gym who has long been estranged from his lone daughter and seems to have only one friend of note – Eddie “Scrap-Iron” Dupr...

Review: The Lion King Winner of two Academy Awards for Best Music

Image
Winner of two Academy Awards for Best Music, both Original Score and Original Song, The Lion King would have won Best Picture had it not been an animated film. Arguably the greatest full-length animated Disney feature of all time, The Lion King is a drama of epic proportions, and a film that forever extended the boundaries of the animation genre.  Hans Zimmer creates an original score that is second to none in cinematic history, and Elton John’s hit single “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” swept the nation upon the film’s release. With powerful and often mesmerizing visual sequences, the use of a timeless plot device, and brilliant direction, the film will stand the test of time as one of the best movies ever produced. The Lion King takes place in Pride Rock, a serene jungle paradise on the African plain. In Pride Rock, every animal lives as part of a harmonious ecosystem, ruled by the greatest animal of all, the strongest and wisest lion, King Mufasa. When Mufasa’s wife gives birth ...

REVIEW: Sideways Nominated For Five Academy Awards

Image
Nominated for five Academy Awards, and winner of Best Screenplay adapted from an outside source, Sideways turned out to be one of the surprise blockbusters of 2004. Based on the Rex Pickett novel of the same name, Sideways is a clever comedy about wine, life, and a group of friends – each in search of his unique identity. Unlike the plot-driven movies that traditionally dominate Hollywood, Sideways is one of those rare pictures which actually “reads” like a novel. The film resembles Seinfeld in that it’s really about nothing, but it’s about everything all at the same time. With very little to speak of in the way of plot, the movie relies heavily on the development of its quirky characters, and in this aspect, Sideways is an overwhelming success. Something about this movie (which I can’t quite put my finger on) makes me love it, and I’m willing to bet that you’ll enjoy it too… Paul Giamatti plays the role of Miles Raymond, a middle-aged, recently-divorced high school teacher struggling ...

Review : “Walk The Line” A Real Legend Is Well

A real legend is well, the stuff of legends. But much harder to reproduce on film, because of the depths of human expression that tend to get lost in the business of making it on time, on budget, and on a subject the public will “buy”. Which means 2005’s “Walk The Line” is that rarest of movies, one that dug deep into the story, put it up as it really unfolded, and managed to bag actors that could carry it off. “Walk The Line” is the hard fighting/drinking/loving story of country icon, Johnny Cash and his love affair with wife June Carter. It lays the foundation for the movie’s focus, and Cash’s real life, by detailing his boyhood in Arkansas, the early death of a brother, and impulsive first marriage that ended in disaster. All of that contributes to the way Cash’s life was already drifting when he sang for Sam Phillips of Sun Records, where he brushed shoulders with another newcomer, Elvis Presley. Chastised for offering a hymn, Joaquin Phoenix rips off a version of Folsom Prison Blu...

REVIEW: Napoleon Dynamite The Most Absurd Comedy Of The Decade

Image
One of the most absurd films of the decade, Napoleon Dynamite still manages to be a hilarious comedy in its own right. Featuring a quirky brand of alienated teen humor, this film relies more on good timing and character body language than just one upbeat sentence. If you enjoy its subtle humor, then Napoleon Dynamite is a film you'll find absolutely hilarious. Otherwise, it can lead to boredom or immediate confusion. The film has an almost non-existent storyline, but what its plot lacks, it makes up for with witty and hilarious comedy sequences. Jon Heder plays the lead role of Napoleon Dynamite, an estranged and bookish high school teenager who lives with his grandmother and older brother, Kip (Aaron Ruell), in Preston, Idaho. Displaying an incomprehensible, unchanging facial expression throughout the film, Napoleon simply glides through life, gets kicked, pushed into a locker, and watches life go by. When a Spanish student named Pedro (Efren Ramirez) moves to the city, Napoleon b...

Gladiator Film Review Winner of Five Academy Awards

Image
Winner of five Academy Awards including Best Picture, and nominated for an additional seven, Gladiator is one of the best produced and directed films of its time. Reminiscent of Mel Gibson's Braveheart, it creates a world that looks so realistic you find yourself pulled back into Rome's heyday. Musical scores, colorful costumes, and elaborate sets combine to create the illusion that one is truly witnessing the trials and tribulations of human existence in early millennial Rome. The film opens with a sobering look at an ancient war that equals "shock and awe" as Roman legions advance against a group of rebels fighting the empire from the outskirts of Gaul. From the moment the legion commander gave the signal to attack, a hellish rage was unleashed as fiery arrows and iron bars slammed into the united front of rebel fighters. This scene is more comparable to Desert Storm than to an ancient battlefield, and visually depicts the incredible power that was once manifested i...

Review: Film Don't Look Up by Director Adam McKay

Image
Don't Look Up is like flashes of various news reports that emerged during the pandemic era, when rulers ignored warnings from scientists but for the benefit of mankind. Through this film, director Adam McKay seems to give a strong satire on the attitude of government officials who have no conscience, thirst for power, are greedy, and do not take sides with the community. Not only that, the phenomenon of the media only chasing traffic for money instead of facts is also McKay's satire in this film. "Moon Knight" Director Mohamed Diab's Strong Criticism For Black Adam Film

Image
Not a few films or TV shows were released with issues regarding inclusion or representation raised for one reason or another. One of them is DC's upcoming "Black Adam." "Black Adam" is a film that has a deep connection to Egyptian mythology. But the film was heavily criticized by "Moon Knight" director Mohamed Diab, who criticized the superhero film's lack of representation of Egypt and its culture. In a new interview translated by The Direct, Egyptian-born Diab expresses her disappointment at "Black Adam" for not taking the initiative with sourcing material that truly highlights the culture and history of the Egyptian homeland. "I was really annoyed with DC when they put Black Adam in a fictitious middle eastern country as an excuse to line up non-Egyptians, when it was clearly meant to be in Egypt," he said. "The opportunity for representation should not be wasted." However, it can't be blamed entirely, consideri...

Image
The Joker is arguably one of the most popular comic strip characters of all time. There are many actors who played the role including one of them is Jared Leto. Leto played the Joker in David Ayer's "Suicide Squad" in 2016. The film was critically acclaimed, until Zack Snyder convinced the Academy Award-winning actor to return as the Joker for 2017's "Justice League." Despite the criticism that accompanies the film, Leto is apparently still enthusiastic about having to return to playing the iconic character. He made the remarks while on a press tour for his upcoming Sony Spider-Man "Morbius" spin-off. "Never say never," the actor told Variety. "For me, characters are like living and breathing people.
